One List, Three Ways
Project Wombat has three lists. All three are sent the same posts, but the three operate differently. (All three lists will, incidentally, reject posts which attempt to go directly to that list instead of to general distribution, and all three are configured so that replies go to general distribution automatically.)
To send a message to the Project Wombat lists, use the address list@project-wombat.org.
To subscribe, follow the link following the list variation you would like to receive.
Project-Wombat: the Classic List
The basic list is Project-Wombat. Messages to this list are not directly moderated under normal circumstances. But there are certain things which are not permitted on this list—flaming, political or religious proselytizing, the posting of job offers, and certain other things listed on that list’s subscription page. If you post too many proscribed messages in succession, then the list will be configured so that your posts have to be approved by the moderators before distribution to this version of the list. The focus of the list is expected to be reasonably on-topic, but jokes and discussion are a part of the list culture.

Project-Wombat-FM: the Filtered List
The most common reason given for unsubscription from the Stumpers list (when people gave reasons, at least) was that the volume of mail was too great to be read. Project-Wombat-FM is a heavily-filtered version of Project Wombat, in which only posts which are on-topic are allowed, and an attempt is made to prevent duplicate answers to questions. The posts in this list are all reviewed by the moderators (the “FM” stands for “Fully Moderated”) and so the list moves a bit more slowly. But if you just don’t have the time to keep up with a normal subscription, this makes a handy way to keep looking for questions to answer.

Project-Wombat-Open: The Price of Liberty is Eternal Off-Topic Posting
If you feel that the rules on Project-Wombat are too restrictive, good news: you can subscribe to Project-Wombat-Open instead and post whatever you like. However, please keep in mind that if your posts do not meet the requirements of Project-Wombat, you may find your posts being held up on that list. There is no requirement whatsoever for focussed discussion on Project-Wombat-Open. We do not guarantee that messages sent to Project-Wombat-Open will be permanently archived; depending on how much traffic is generated by this list, we may begin regularly deleting older messages.
